CDV of Union General E.L. Viele, Autographed,
with imprint of “J. Gurney & Son, N.Y.” Ink signed on verso, “Egbert L. Viele taken Is(land) Daufuskie Savannah River 1861.” Viele was an 1847 graduate of West Point who saw service in Mexico and on the frontier before resigning and becoming an accomplished civil engineer and technical writer during the 1850’s. He was commissioned a Brigadier General on August 17, 1861 and commanded the forces on Daufuskie Island during the reduction of Fort Pulaski on the Savannah River in April 1862. Viele then became military governor of Norfolk for over a year before being posted to Ohio to oversea the draft in that state. Not surprisingly Viele resigned in late October 1863 and returned to New York where he resumed engineering. He had a brilliant post-war career in his chosen profession and served in Congress as a Democrat in 1885-87. He died in New York City on April 22, 1902.
Trimmed at bottom, else VG.
