CDV of KIA Major Winthrop
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Signed CDV of Major Theodore Winthrop, believed the first Union Officer of rank killed in battle. He served with the 7th New York Infantry during Big Berthel, where he was killed in action on 10 June 1861. Historical accounts convey Major Winthrop rallied his troops by exclaiming “One more charge boys, and the day is ours.'' Soon thereafter, he was killed by a musket ball to the heart, shot by black Confederate soldier Sam Ashe, 1st North Carolina Infantry. CDV is signed in ink by Winthrop beneath his likeness. Very good.
