CDV of Emancipated Slave Children with Letter CDV of Emancipated Slave Children with Explanatory Let
CDV of Emancipated Slave Children with Explanatory Letter. An unusual CDV accompanied by an even more unusual letter, 8" x 10", Philadelphia, December 31, 1863, to historian Benson Lossing enclosing the CDV. The CDV is part of a series of images which were sold to raise money to educate freed slaves in the vicinity of New Orleans and portrayed various extremely light skinned children of color, all of whom were said to be emancipated slaves taken from New Orleans. This particular carte shows three children, two girls and a boy, bearing the printed caption: "THESE CHILDREN Were turned out of the St. Lawrence Hotel, Chestnut St., Philadelphia, on account of color." With J. E. McClees, Philadelphia credit on verso. The letter to Lossing reads: "I enclose a card photograph published today, after three emancipated slaves who were turned out of the St. Lawrence a fortnight after on a/c [account] of color -- I have seen the children -- they are as white as you are -- they are the children of Euge', formerly a lawyer in N[ew]. O[rleans] now in the Rebel service..." A fascinating group, worthy of further research.
