a young private wearing sack coat with imprint of A. Westphal & Co., Chicago having inked notation on verso that reads, Shot by Indians/March 16, 1869/At Fort Randall/DT. Although the CDV is unnamed, this is almost certainly Pvt. Elias H. Prall, Co. F., 22nd US Infantry killed in a skirmish with Sioux Indians while on a wood gathering expedition near Ft. Randall on March 16, 1869.

A letter written by First Sergeant Morgan S. Smith of Company F. to Prall’s sister, Elizabeth, describing Elias’ death together with a Civil War likeness of Prall can be found on the genealogical site https://atomicmall.com/view.php/id=217998. Elias Prall had served in the 52nd Indiana during the Civil War and mustered out in September 1865. His brother, David Prall, was a corporal in the 23rd Indiana and was mortally wounded in August 1864 during the siege of Atlanta. Ft. Randall situated on the upper Missouri River was founded in 1856 and became a significant staging area during the Sioux wars.

Condition: CDV spotted with heavy wear and rounded corners, G.
