CDV OF MAJOR GENERAL O.O. HOWARD. Crisp vignette of the popular Howard with bm of "Schwing & Rudd" having ink identification and "4th Corps" notation on verso dating the image to 1864. Bowdoin College and West Point graduate, Howard was first elected Colonel of the 3rd Maine. After loosing an arm at Seven Pines and promoted to division he succeeded to command the 11th Corps early in 1863. Following a route at the hands of 'Stonewall' Jackson in May, Howard was center stage at Gettysburg taking over from the fallen Reynolds and personally rallying the 1st Corps, solidifying the defense of Cemetery Ridge. Moving west he commanded the 4th Corps during the Atlanta campaign and finished the war as a wing commander under Sherman. Controversy clung to Howard post-war as he crusaded on behalf of the freed black with a religious-like zeal that offended many. Cartes is near MINT with great clarity. Provenance: Mickle album.
