CDV OF BVT. CAPTAIN JOSEPH B. FORAKER, 89TH OVI. An unpublished late war "Brady" view with Foraker's ink signature and rank on recto. Foraker crafted an exemplary service career followed by an illustrious political tenure. Kesee's recently published Too Young To Die contains a summary of Foraker's place among 19th century American notables. Sixteen-year old Joseph Foraker came from the ranks of Company A., 89th OVI and had been brevetted Captain in March 1865 after leading his company through the Atlanta campaign. At Savannah he served as AADC to Major General Slocum whiledetached to the Signal Corps and much impressed General Sherman who entrusted young Foraker with relaying critical communications through the porous lines on more than one occasion. Notable was Sherman's famous Christmas message to Lincoln that offered the fallen Savannah as yuletide greetings. Post-war, Foraker the lawyer served his Buckeye State on the judiciary, as Governor (1886-1890) and as US Senator, finally retiring from politics in 1908. Beloved by his fellow-soldiers as a veteran's advocate and for his refusal to return trophy Confederate battle flags, Foraker lived until 1917. Provenance: Mickle album.
