CDV GROUPING IF THE 15TH VETERAN VOLUNTEER CORPS.
CDV GROUPING IF THE 15TH VETERAN VOLUNTEER CORPS. A large collection consisting of forty cartes assembled by an unknown member of the 15th Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps during 1863-64 and once held in an album. Twenty-two cdv's have ink or period pencil identifications while the balance are not identified. Some have revenue stamps affixed to the verso and most have either Springfield, Illinois or Chicago, Illinois imprints with the familiar backmark of "D.F. Brandon, Camp Douglas, Ill." predominating. Many of the cartes have been trimmed top and bottom and range in condition from G to VG with uniform soiling and corner damage. The 15th VRC was organized in October 1863 by the consolidation of several independent companies of disabled soldiers and spent the majority of their service guarding Confederate prisoners at Camp Douglas along with the 8th VRC. In April 1865 a detachment of the 15th VRC formed an Honor Guard that accompanied the remains of the slain President from Chicago to his final resting place in Springfield. The regiment mustered out from June to November 1865. A number of the photographs show the enlisted version of VRC's distinctive light blue uniform to good advantage. There are two uncommon views of the officer version of the regulation light blue frock coat with dark collar and cuffs (sometimes confused with Confederate) instead of the more common dark blue frock coat. Two equally uncommon views of VRC bandsmen round out the photography. The identified men are: James C. Strong, "Col. 15th V.R.C." by "D.F. Brandon." Signed on verso in Strong's hand and trimmed. James Strong was Lt. Colonel of the 38th NY when he was wounded at Williamsburg, Va. in May 1862. He was promoted Colonel of the regiment in October 1862 and transferred to the VRC in June 1863. Strong commanded Camp Douglas and was promoted Brevet Brigadier General in March 1865. Two different views of Major James E. Cornelius, one signed in pencil. Cornelius was a Captain in the 100th Pennsylvania (the "Roundheads") and was wounded at Chantilly in September 1862. Lt. Colonel Louis Schaffner, 153rd Illinois, who resigned in August 1865. Captain Joshua H. Hastings by "Reynolds & Rider, Chicago." Hastings had prior service in the 25th Illinois and joined the VRC in October 1863. He is shown wearing the rare regulation officer version of the VRC uniform. Captain Nathan Cole by "T.L. Rivers, St. Louis." Cole served in the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry and 20th Wisconsin Infantry and was wounded at Prairie Grove, Arkansas in December 1862. He transferred to the VRC in September 1863. Cole also wears the officer version of the VRC frock coat. Lieutenant Isaiah S. Taylor by "Hesler, Chicago" and signed with a "Camp Douglas" notation. Taylor was with the 21st Illinois before joining the VRC in October 1863. Lieutenant F.D. Garrety, 15th Reg., no prior service indicated. Lieutenant Frank Stuart(?), no information found. Private D.A. Jones, no prior service known. Private D.W. Ward, no prior service known. Private Charles H. Bouton with "Silver Band" notation under name. He had prior service in the 157th NY. Private Henry Helmer. Coat tinted light blue and kepi with "15" and "FB" for field band. No information found. Sergeant Holt, Co. H., 15th VRC. No prior service known. Private John W. Rinear, signed as "Fife Major, 15th VRC." Rinear had been in Co. A, 47th Indiana before being discharged to the VRC. Sergeant T. (or G.) H. Peters, Co. C., 15th VRC. No prior service known. Private G.W. Handacre, no information found. Private Harvey Eisiminger, no information found. Private I. F. Erwin, no information found. Private Wm. Moore, no information found. Privates Davis and Houk in a single view, no information found. Two identical views of Private A. Jones with civilian L. Sanders. No information found.
