CDV ALBUM OF CAPT. WM. H. MICKLE, 134TH NY.
CDV ALBUM OF CAPT. WM. H. MICKLE, 134TH NY. The personal compilation of Captain Mickle containing numerous military cartes with family views spanning the 1861 to 1870's time period, housed in a massive twenty-five page brown leather album. William H. Mickle enlisted as a private in Company H., 134th NY on August 22, 1862 and was promoted to sergeant a month later. Assigned to Von Steinwehr's division in the 11th Corps, the 134th was present at Fredericksburg but saw little of the 'elephant' until Chancellorsville the following May where it bore the brunt of Jackson's flank attack that nearly annihilated the corps. The regiment marched to Gettysburg in the van of the army reduced to 400 rifles and was heavily engaged on July 1st and 2nd paying for the defense of Cemetery Hill with 252 casualties, including the recently promoted Lieutenant Mickle of Company I, who was wounded on the first day. The shattered 11th Corps shifted west in the fall of 1863 and was engaged during the Chattanooga campaign before striking out for Knoxville and the relief of that city. Prior to the Atlanta campaign the 11th and 12th Corps were consolidated and a new 20th Corps formed. In April 1864 Lt. Mickle took leave of his regiment and commenced duties as Acting Assistant Adjutant General, Artillery Brigade, 20th Corps. Mickle served in staff capacity during the Atlanta and Savannah fighting and through the Carolina's before his final discharge as Captain of Company B, 134th NY on June 9, 1865. This significant portion of Mickle's album contains eight different views of the young officer ranging from an early 1862 cdv as sergeant, a tinted tintype of a heavily bearded Mickle, the Lieutenant on Lookout Mt., 1863 by "R.M. Linn" and Captain and Mrs. Mickle in 1870 plus four others. Rarely is a line officer as well photographed as Mickle. Additionally, there are fourteen identified military cdv's that include fellow 134th New York officers, friends and later staff associations plus three wartime composite cartes of Union (two) and Confederate generals and leaders by "A.S. Morse." The family component contains 134 civilian cdv's and gemtypes. It should be noted that many of the cdv identifications are duplicated under the appropriate album sleeve in ink. The fourteen military cdv's are in order in which they appear: Captain Joesph Schoeinger by "R.M. Linn" and signed "Capt. & ACQM 4th A.C." Schoeinger was a staff association with prior service in the 29th and 68th NY. Cartes is trimmed. Assistant Surgeon Lysander Wilcox Kennedy, no bm, signed with name and "Asst. Surg. 123rd Regt. N.Y. Vols in charge Artillery Brigade 20th A.C." Lysander was promoted to Surgeon of the 119th NY at the end of the war. Cartes trimmed. Captain Clinton C. Brown, 134th NY, no bm. Period pencil signature on verso with rank trimmed off at bottom. Captain Brown served in Company F., E., K. and G. and was promoted to Lt. Colonel in July 1864 but not mustered; he was discharged in September 1864. Captain E.H. Kirlin by "F.H. Simpson, Scranton, Pa." signed on back, "E.H. Kirlin, Capt. General Howard's Staff to Mr. W.H. Mickle." Kirlin was a volunteer aide-de-camp and in April 1864 became Howard's "Chief of Scouts." Howard cited Kirlin's service on several occasions in his reports (see O.R.'s). Edward P. Stowell on Lookout Mt. with name and "Hastings, Minnesota" on verso by "R.M. Linn." Stowell appears to be wearing a uniform and served in some capacity as a "clerk." Cartes is trimmed and somewhat light. Two different views including one by "Addis" of 2nd Lieutenant Eugene T. Freeman, 13th NY Light Battery.Lt. Freeman was wounded on July 23, 1864 before Atlanta and resigned the following May. Both views are trimmed and one is incorrectly inked "Geo. W. Freeman" by someone unfamiliar with his name. Captain James M. Dart by "Wolfe Gallery," Alexandria, VA. Pencil signature on recto partially trimmed away. Dart was a lieutenant in Company E., 134th NY before rising to command Company B. He was discharged in March 1864. A published view of an armed Colonel Elias Piessner, 119th NY without bm. Ink notation under photograph reads, "Prof Gen. Lit. Union College. Killed Chancellorsville." Cartes is untrimmed and without written identification other than album caption. Captain John Stewart by "Hoag & Quicks," Cincinnati. This is probably Captain Stewart of the 4th OVC who died at the Queen City in November 1864. Stewart's regiment has been trimmed away. Sergeant Nelson S. Young in gemtype format identified in ink underneath photograph. Sgt. Young was in G. Company of the 134th NY and mustered out with the regiment in June 1865. Mount is trimmed. Surgeon Ernst Wilhelm Thurm by "Henry Ulke," Washington, having inked salutation to Mickle with added "October 17, 1864 Nashville, Tenn." date. Thurm was a volunteer surgeon brevetted Lt. Colonel in August 1865 before mustering out. Cartes is trimmed. Private John Cornell, Company H., 134th NY. No bm. Identifying ink notation beneath photograph reads, " John Cornell, Killed at Gettysburgh." Cornell was actually severely wounded on July 1st and died of his wounds at Philadelphia on July 9 or 10; listed in These Honored Dead. Cdv is trimmed at bottom and is identified solely by Mickle's album caption. Captain Charles O. Howard signed in his hand. No bm. Howard served as 1st Lt. and Adjutant of the 8th Indiana Infantry before resigning to accept a regular commission in the 18th US Infantry in July 1862. He was brevetted Major in March 1865 and resigned in February 1866. PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOT WILL BE SOLD ON EBAY LIVE AUCTIONS BETWEEN 4:00-5:00pm EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME ON MAY 10, 2002.
