CDV ALBUM OF BROWN-WATER NAVY OFFICERS.
CDV ALBUM OF BROWN-WATER NAVY OFFICERS. An uncommon subject matter comprising an album and loose cdv's belonging to Peter Hartwig. There are twenty-five uniformed cartes including seven identified individuals with a lithograph of a warship. The album appears to be a mid-war assembly by an unknown naval officer, possibly Engineer Hartwig, assigned to the upper deck of either the USS Judge Torrence and/or the USS Fort Hindman serving in the western flotilla under Admiral Porter. The photography imprints reflect the full scope of the ship's area of operations and include the river cities of Natchez (Hughs & Lakin" and "Gurney's"), New Orleans ("J.A. Sheldon") and Cairo, Illinois ("Munn & Faul"). The Torrence was an unarmed 600 ton paddle steamer purchased by the navy in 1861 and used as a munitions ship and tender on the western waterways. The Hindman was also a paddle steamer converted into a "tinclad" in 1862-63 and armed with seven guns. The Hindman was particularly active during the winter 1864 Red River campaign coming under fire as she approached Trinity, Louisiana and sustaining twenty-seven hits that disabled an engine. The lithograph of the warship is thought to be the Hindman. The uniformed cdv's offer a detailed portrayal of the numerous and varied naval rank insignia that changed twice during the war. The seven identified officers mostly from the engineering division are: John Denhart, Acting Third Assistant Engineer (commissioned 4/13/64, discharged 8/6/65). Robert Mahatha, Acting First Assistant Engineer (com'd 10/1/62, dis'd 11/28/65). Elliott P. Grapevine(?) signed as "Pilot USS Fort Hindman." His name is not found in the Navy Register and he may be a uniformed civilian pilot. Jonas S. Slough, Acting First Assistant Engineer (com'd 10/1/62, dismissed from service 5/15/63). Jacob Bumgarner, Mate (com'd 4/22/63, dis'd 11/3/65). William H. Doane, Acting Paymaster (com'd 7/18/63, dis'd 12/18/65) and Peter R. Harwig, Acting Chief Engineer (com'd 10/1/62, dis'd 11/11/65). The remaining seventeen military views include some excellent photographs, but are unfortunately all unidentified except by rank. There are also thirty-seven civilian images dating into the 1880's some with the name "Hartwig." Condition ranges from G to VG with minor handling and some cartes with clipped corners.
