CDV of Captain Ernst Gerhardt of the 46th New York Infantry, Company C. Signed to verso in ink, ''Truly Yours / E Gerhardt / Captain.'' Gerhardt mustered in on 22 March 1862 and mustered out as a Captain on 28 July 1865. The 46th New York, ''Fremont Rifles,'' was a German regiment assigned to Sherman's division. It was active at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomy and Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Spring Church and Hatcher's Run. Image measures 2.5'' x 4''. Some soiling to card mount, else very good.
