CC BRAND WHALING HARPOON GUN, CIRCA 1860.
Cal. 7/8". NSN. This well used rarely seen early model percussion shouldered gun made by Christopher C. Brand of Norwich CT. These were first made about 1850 in this style with wood butt stock. Later guns were made with cast skeletal stocks which are most often seen. 35" overall, 20" octagonal to round 15-pound barrel, fixed rear sight, brass pin front sight, ramrod pipe fitted on bottom, solid iron frame and side plate, stock retained by the 2 original brass sleeved bolts, iron butt plate. This survivor presents a rare and unique piece of American history, well patinaed and weathered, showing a long life at sea. This gun shot harpoons or more commonly "bomb lances" that exploded after penetration. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of pages by Norm Flayderman concerning whaling guns. CONDITION: fair to good overall, iron patina, butt stock loose, has later butt plate added for continued use, erosion & reductions to wood, hammer has welded repair for continued use, mechanics fine, good smooth bore.
