CATHOLIC MARTYRS OF THE ENGLISH REFORMATION
Rare imprint, The Humble Petition of the Lords and Commons to the King, for Leave to Remove the Magazine at Hull to the Tower of London: And Also to Take Off the Reprieve of the Six Condemned Priests Now in New-gate. Together with His Majesties Answer Thereunto, (London: Robert Barker), 1642. 7pp. 8vo., expertly inlaid. When religious persecution of Catholics broke out in England in 1641, Fr. Walter Colman (1600-1645) and six fellow priests were brought to trial, apparently for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to Charles I, above all others. All were condemned to be hanged, drawn, and quartered, but through the intervention of the French ambassador the execution was stayed indefinitely. Theirs became one of the most celebrated cases of religious persecution of the Reformation.

Estimate: $300 - 400.
