CARVED WOOD AND PAINT DECORATED AMERICAN EAGLE WALL PLAQUE ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE STAPF. George Stapf (1862-1958), Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Circa late 19th Century. The head and upper body facing upward left with open beak and spread wings. Surmounted by an unfurled American flag with applied and painted stars, and grasping a shield in its right talon and arrows in its left talon. The flag and shield with red, white and blue polychrome surface. REFERENCE: For a similar eagle see Sotheby’s Sale No. 8097, May 19th, 2005 Lot #140. SIZE: 30” l x 22-1/2” h. CONDITION: The piece appears to be in original paint and finish. Never has been restored in as found condition. There is a section of the top right wing, which is missing. Part of the flag staff and top staff ball is missing. The arrows have been affixed to the left of their original position. One arrow has slice chip and another is missing its end. There is paint chipping to the red stripes of the flag. Possibly missing a number of raised stars. A spectacular find in a mostly intact plaque. 9-27455
