This is a beautiful depiction of St. Christopher bearing on his shoulder the Infant Christ. It is carved from a solid block of Cherry Wood and hand painted over gesso. The faces are absolutely wonderful for their shape and expressions. It's in great condition for it's age. The painted almond shaped eyes indicate a late medieval influence but the man I bought it from in France told me the position of the Infant high on the right shoulder brings it somewhere into the middle 17th century and the Baroque period. I have researched this but can't find a reference so I still think it is from around 1650, however I will state the previous owner's estimation. It is a wonderful and unique collectors piece.

All inquiries and additional picture requests very welcome.
