A outstanding carved Japanese elephant ivory figural action cane with a 4.5" long ivory tau type handle. The handleis elaborately carved in the form of a hollow tree. A detailed snake with open mouth is preparing to enter a knot-hole in the side of tree in pursuit of a monkey, hiding inside of the trunk . When the handle is tipped forward,the head of the monkey pops out of the end of the branch, as if trying to escape the snake. Artist signed inJapanese script on lower right side of ivory on a slightly raised square block. Mounted on a beautiful malacca shaftwith a .75" marked 14K yellow gold collar with anchor hallmark. Collar is engraved with block letters "MAURICESWITZER NEW YORK". Total length 33", 1.5" horn ferrule. An outstanding cane.The front of the ivory Tau type handle appears to have had a metal (probably gold) cap, which is missing, elseexcellent.(EST 800-1000)
