CARVED EAGLE TOBACCO ADVERTISING PLAQUE.
Attributed to George Stapf (1862-1958), Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, early 20th century, pine. Spread-winged eagle with crossed flags, applied stars, and a shield on his breast that faintly reads "Chew Am Eagle Tobacco." Appears to retain most of its original paint. 37"w. Sold at Parke-Bernet (New York), November 1973.
For another similar Stapf eagle also with similar American Eagle Tobacco advertising, see Keno Auctions (New York), May 2010, lot 557.
Condition: One finial reglued. 9 stars missing. The blue field of the shield has been overpainted (lighter blue, original blue visible in some places), and the tobacco slogan is under the later paint. The example that sold at Keno auctions had a similar repaint done on the shield, covering up a nearly identical advertising slogan.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by our Conditions of Sale.
