Wanting to capture all the detail and nuance of the spectacular views he had been told awaited him there, Watkins hired a cabinetmaker to build a large camera that could accomodate 18 x 22 inch "mammoth" glass plate negatives. On that trip Watkins made at least thirty mammoth views and one hundred stereo photographs. These photographs found their way around the world and made Watkins famous. He made several subsequent visits to Yosemite and photographed other natural wonders in the west, later exhibiting them at international exhibitions including the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867. Lots 74 and 78 are from his second visit to Yosemite.
