<B>CAMPO DEL CIELO - CLASSIC IRON METEORITE</B></I><BR> <I>Iron, coarse octahedrite<BR>Gran Chaco, Argentina</B></I><BR>First reported in 1576, the Campo del Cielo fall has produced some of the largest and most exciting meteorites to be found anywhere in the world. Only comparatively recently, however, was a new strewn field for this fall discovered - the elliptical area across which many individual meteorites and fragments are "strewn" - on higher ground and therefore better protected from water and other oxidants in the earth than the field on the valley floor. This classic and compact example is from the later find, though not entirely devoid of the delicate rust-traces that add character to an already fascinating shape and surface texture.
