CAMPBELL ( Thomas ). Strictures on the Ecclesiastical and literary history of Ireland : from the most acnient times. . . . Also, an historical sketch of the constitution and government of Ireland, from the most early authenticated period down to the year 1783. Dublin : Printed for Luke White, No. 86, Dame-street, 1789FIRST EDITION, pp xii, 418 and errata leaf, the half-title bound following title, 8vo, small old stamp in a few places and some light browning but still a very good copy, pleasantly and sympathetically bound in calf-backed marbled boards, gilt spine, with contrasting label, gilt. Todd, Edmund Burke, p.273. “A book which went some way to display Campbell’s patriot politics.”(ODNB). He is a more lively and interesting writer than the dry title of this present book indicates. There are substantial sections that take the form of epistolary exchanges (one includes a letter from Edmund Burke) and Campbell does not shy away from controversy. It is also worth noting that Campbell spent time in Johnson’s circle during visits to London. Mrs. Thrale called him “a fine showy talking man,” and Boswell referred to Campbell as “so good humoured. . . and so thankful for any civilities. . . that he was quite like a pet sheep.”ENGLISH PRE 1801; DUBLIN PRINTED; IRELAND; HISTORY; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
