Note: Loosely inserted is a carbon copy of a typed letter from Stephen Spender to Campbell deploring the work's slandering of MacSpaundy (i.e.MacNeice, Auden, Day Lewis and Spender). He calls Campbell "a liar, a gross slanderer, an empty-headed boaster, a coward, a bully and a Facist."
He concludes by promising to send copies of this letter to Geoffrey Faber, MacNeice etc. and to produce it on every occasion that Campbell's poem is discussed in literary circles. He also sends it to him for the opportunity "to protect yourself by the law." and five others [7]
