CAMILO CIENFUEGOS
Cienfuegos endorses Partagas cigars!

(d. 1959), one of the most important of the Cuban revolutionaries, a close associate of Che and the Castro brothers. Cienfuegos rose from being an undisciplined fighter to a brilliant, disciplined captain of the point platoon, the most dangerous position in the war. He commanded a 700-man force of the revolutionary army, furiously attacking government troops in Camagüey and Las Villas. Less than a year after their victory, on October 28, 1959, Cienfuegos' Cesna 310 mysteriously disappeared over the ocean during a night flight from Camagüey to Havana. An immediate search was called, but the plane was never found. Rare I.S.P., 10" x 8" b/w, shows Cienfuegos dressed in a fatigue shirt and sporting a broad grin, standing amongst about thirty other people in a crowded room. He inscribed the photo at top (in Spanish): "Year of Liberation' January 20, 1959 [17 days after Castro's administration took office] I hope you keep this photo as a souvenir of my visit to the factory where they make the best cigars in the world, the Partagas. Affectionately, the great consumer, Camilo Cienfuego". Fittingly, Cienfuego has a large cigar poking out from his pocket. Also - a portrait of Abraham Lincoln graces the wall! With a note of provenance on verso. A heavy crease bisects the inscription and signature, with other minor marginal creases. A great item symbolic of the Cuban Revolution.

Estimate: $1,500 - 2,000.
