CAMILLE COROT France 1796-1875 Bateliers sous
CAMILLE COROT France 1796-1875 Bateliers sous l’arbre à la branche cassée Signed Corot. Oil on canvas, 46 x 61 cm. Made around 1865 Jean Babtiste Camille Corot started, according to his father’s will, in a weaving mill. Determined to become a painter, he succeeded in obtaining economical support from his father in order to study painting. He started in the studio of Jean-Victor Bertin. All his life Corot was a travelling painter. He made several trips to Italy, 1825-1828-1843. He visited Fontainebleau, Normandy, Brittany, Chartres, Dunkerque, Boulogne-sur Mer, Berck. He went later on to Burgundy, explored le Nivernais and Auvergne. In 1841-1842 he travelled to Switzerland, in 1854 to Holland, to London in 1862, to Auvers-sur-Oise in 1868 etc. He regularly exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1827, getting his paintings refused in 1843 and 1847, but obtained his first medal in 1848, as well as several other distinctions in the years to come. He became Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1846. From his early years Corot was influenced by the néo-classical movement, but started to paint “plein air“ and showed a special interest in landscapes, an interest that developed fully during his first journey to Italy. The landscapes of Corot can at the same time arouse enthousiasm in the dilettante of classical landscapes, who compares them to Poussin or Lorrain, as being not only copies of nature but well made compositions, as well as they can be appreciated as romantic and poetical dreams - precursors to the impressionist movement. A landscape by Corot has only an illusory simplicity, in reality it is much more complex. PROVENANCE: Vente Corot, 4 december 1880, Seymour collection EXPERTISE: Martin Dierterle certificat nr 2595
