CAMERON, SIMON
(1799 - 1889) Secretary of War in Lincoln's cabinet, often involved in scandal concerning army contracts. Fine content A.L.S. ""Simon Cameron"" 1p. 4to., New York, June 19, 1858, to one George Howard marked private, concerning a California land purchase between [J. P.] Morgan, Cameron, and Howard, in part: ""àI have done nothing but to introduce Brodreck to Morgan. He is so very sensitive that I fear nothing will be done for him unless you come here and give the matter your head and heart. He proposes to give for $20,000 property now value at $75,000. A man from California told me that it is now worth more than $75,000. He will probably go out in the steamer on Monday, but you must stop himàurge Morgan to get the money. Why can't you and I give between us $5,000 to show that we are in earnest..."". Very good.
