[CALIFORNIA GOLD MINING] MinerS. S. Draft writes to his friend J. C. Leonardson in Wisconsin describing mining operations in CA. ALS, 4pp, 4to, Chip Flat, Jan 1, 1856. Accompanied by “Langton’s Pioneer Express” transmittal cover. Superb mining content. Draft advises his married friend against bringing his family to California. In part, “...Leaving a family to come to this country is a very serious matter. California has not changed much since you left. wages here are $5.00 per day. The River & surface diggens [sic] are nearly exhausted, but the hill & mountains contain inexhaustible supplies of the precious metal. At this & all mining towns in this vicinity we have to tunnel from 400 to 1000 feet through the solid rock before we reach the deposit...” He details the changes in law governing the filing of claims which are “four times the size of Coyote claims in Nevada...Mitch is now engaged in running a tunnel at American Hill, new diggings just being opened. The gravel in front where the lead crops out pays wages for sluicing. Wolf Creek on which the diggings are situated has been a very rich stream. At Bunker Hill which is on the opposite side of the creek in the same lead is paying largely & Nebraska about 2 miles from American Hill on the same lead is also paying well...Mitch has two claims in his company on 100 feet front. Such a claim here would be a ‘Princely Fortune.” He advises that he is “engaged in a number of tunneling operations now of which are [not] paying anything at present but I have great hopes of them in the future...If you were here you could make $100 per month without doubt & perhaps more. Nothing could give me greater pleasure than to see you again in this country. If you were here with your family in five years you could buy up a fortune with less hand labor than it would require to make a living where you now are. If you should conclude to return to this country perhaps it would be best to leave your family for the present & send for them when you get settled...” Much more. Boldly penned and signed.
