4.75"x3.75" black and white photograph of the California Mother Lode River, circa 1890. The exact location from which the photo was taken is unknown as well as the exact date. The river is located in the bottom right of the photo, with wooded hills surrounding the edges. The rocky bank of the river is also visible on both sides, though more of the left bank is in the photo than the right. A small sliver of the sky can be seen on the top of the photo. The California Mother Lode River is located on the South Fork of the American River in Colomo, California. The river is in the foothills between Sacramento, California and Lake Tahoe. The river derives it's name from the idea that a vein of gold ran from the main lode to the American River. Although this has been proven false by geologists, the name still persists in the area of the river [Gudde, Erwin G. California Place Names. Berkley; Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1949].
