Incorporated in New York in 1877. Cert. #1697, issued at New York in 1879 for 100 shares. U/C. Works in Yuba and Nevada Counties, Cal. Printed at the bottom. The company consolidated all of the water ditches in the district, controlling a total of 110 miles of ditch. The whole district extending from Nevada City to Sacramento Valley and bounded by the Yuba and Bear Rivers was supplied with water by this company [Raymond, 1875]. The use of ditches to supply water for mining dates back to 1852 when ditches were dug to bring water to Rough and Ready, Newton, and Smartville. In the 1870’s, most of the production around Smartville was produced by hydraulic mining which required immense amounts of water. The Excelsior Water and Mining Co. also controlled a number of mines including the Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Greenhorn, Live Yankee, Smartville Cons. and Rose’s Bar. The certificate has some browning. Vignette of an Indian brave on horseback at the bottom. American Bank Note Co., N.Y. printer.
