There are 23 letters, 1 post card and 1 cover in this grouping. The postcard is to Louie Earl Williams at 145 Truckee Street in Reno. It is postmarked on 18 April 1914 at 3 PM from Winters, Cal. It has a one cent, green postal stamp. The black and white picture on the card is of the Woodland, CA Hall of Records. It is wrinkled. Some of the letters in this group are addressed to Miss Louie Earl and others are addressed to Louie Williams. Some are in pencil and others in pen. A few of the letters were written by Louie’s father. Some of the letters talk about farming life around Winters. Others talk about the availability of work and jobs. One of the brother-in-laws went to Bodie in 1880. It seems he was going to be a teamster and drive his wagon between Bodie and Carson City. Evidence of the national 1893 recession is talked about in a letter from 1894. The chickens sell for so little they are going to keep theirs and eat them. The letters have some ink smudges but are in good condition. The cover in this group has no stamp but is postmarked from Winters on 14 December. It has no year. It is addressed to Miss Louie (the rest is torn off), Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. It is in fair condition. A small news clipping of a poem titled “Dancing at the Negro Quarters” by Irvin Russ is also included in this group. Good condition.
