c1900-Two small photos matted in an oak frame, measuring 8.5" x 15” overall, showing ranch hands standing next to horses loaded with hay. There is a caption on the back which reads: “Mas vale tarde’ que nunca” (Translation: Better late than never) and “Ranch pack horses packing hay to Poker Flat.” Another illegible handwritten caption follows. Poker Flat, made famous by Bret Harte’s tale, “The Outcasts of Poker Flat,” is mainly a placer mining district in northern Sierra County about 10 miles north of Downieville. It includes the Howland Flat, Table Rock, Deadwood, Mt. Fillmore, Potosi, and Rattlesnake Peak areas. First the streams were mined during the gold rush. Then hydraulic mining was done on a major scale from the late 1850s through the 1880s. Following that some lode mining and drift mining continued through the early 1900s, and prospecting continued into the 1920s and 1930s. [Ref: www.museumca.org/goldrush/dist-pokerflat.html]. HKA#64587
