A rather mottled photo of the town showing multiple residences and a few commercial buildings. Photographers are Pierce & Cobb (printed on the matting, as is the name of the town). 4 ½ x 7 ½.” The photo has several spots on its surface and what appears to be some sort of water damage, making it look out of focus. The town was founded with the construction of James Alexander Forbes’ flour mill on the edge of Los Gatos Creek in the 1860s. Originally formed from a Spanish land grant in the 1840s, the town was named La Rinconada de Los Gatos (Cat’s Corner) because of the screaming mountain lions in the night. Incorporated in 1887, the town was an important center for logging operations in the Santa Cruz Mountains, wheat farming orchards, and canneries, well into the beginning of the 20th century [Ref: www.town.los-gatos.ca.us/DocumentView].
