The Douglas C. Daniels California Counter Collection! This is one of the two finest collections of California Gaming Counters to our knowledge. This incredible collection contains 144 different pieces with virtually every denomination of gold coin counter from $1 to $20, with perhaps more than half the collection in Mint State. Patterned after the gold pieces of the period, many look like the actual coins Double Eagle ($20), Eagle ($10), Half Eagle ($5), Quarter Eagle ($2.50), and Gold Dollars. Each piece is identified with Fauver catalog number, with the exception of the unlisted pieces. The collection was an award winning display at the ANA coin show in Sacramento in March, 2011. These fabulous coins should be collected right along side Pioneer Gold Coins. They were made and used in the 1850's in the place of coin because there wasn't any – and that's why California private gold coins were issued in the first place. These coins differ because they are not made of precious metal and were used in gaming only (not daily commerce), though most were gilted. The reason we don't see many of these counters in numismatic auctions is simply because the darned things are so rare, with the exception of Fauver 315 $5 1849 Miner counter, that most have never seen them. This collection took more than thirty years to assemble by major California coin dealer and collector, Douglas C. Daniels and he does not want it broken, hence we offer it here in its entirety. It was one of the most difficult collections ever assembled. Detailed inventory published in the web catalog or by request.
