c1860-An advertising color card for the Clipper Ship "Robin Hood," by George D. Sutton`s Clipper line. Listed as the "Sharpest Clipper Loading and the Finest Clipper in the Trade." The litho printer for this 6.6"x4.1" card is listed as "Nesbitt & Co. Printers, NY." The vignette features a stylized Robin Hood on the shore, with a full sail clipper heeling over in the background. These printed cards were done on enameled cardstock, sometimes with 5-7 color overprints. They were typically done to drum up business for the clipper line. The "Robin Hood" was built in Scotland, and noted for its speed. It was 183` long, and was advertised as making the passage (typically San Francisco to New York, around the "Horn") in as little as 106 days. This card is in very good condition, with some age checking in the color field, and slight fading of some of the text. A nice piece of history. Classic gold rush era marketing for clipper ships.
