Book of pictures and articles, many involving John Coggeshall, datelined Providence, RI, 1914. A Web Rhode Island article is included, which covers the highlights of his life. Born in 1854 and married to Maria Wood in 1874, he was brought to San Francisco after a fleet of 16 whaling vessels were crushed in the ice in the Arctic Ocean in 1876. With all but two vessels lost Coggeshall survived, was prominently involved in the newspaper business with the San Francisco Chronicle, and was a confidant and representative of Elias (Lucky) Baldwin in the hotel industry. The album measures 10" x 14" with the spine, front, and back covers damaged and repaired with tape, approximately 160 pages. Page one shows a picture signed by John Coggeshall, Providence, R.I., October 28, 1914. Most of the articles appear to have been collected from 1903-1915, with a significant number addressing the WW I. German, French, British, and Irish war involvement are all chronicled, while only pages apart are photographs of "Japanese Physicians and Red Cross Nurses Reach New York on Their Way to the Battlefields of Europe," and "H.I.H. The Czarevitch and Hereditary Grand Duke Alexis Nicolaievitch, Heir to the Throne of all the Russias." In addition to war-related pieces, many entertainment, sports, and cartoons are also included. Very interesting piece.
