c1850-Extremely rare hand-drawn and written account of the great June 14 1850 fire (Baird #97). The cover sheet is a detailed panorama of the bay, with the city burning in the foreground. The headline proclaims "500 Buildings Burned" and "Pub by WB Cooke & C Portsmith (illigible)." There is a small map also indicating the affected area and streets. The attached letter is an account listing the circumstances. Please note that a section of this is missing, and it has some age-related holes, creasing and cracks. The famous fire started around 8AM, in the chimney of a bakery at the rear of the Merchants Hotel between Sacramento and Clay streets. Strong summer winds pushed the fire to the bay, causing great devastation to the wealthiest parts of town in a little more than 3 hours. A rare and unique piece of San Francisco history. HKA#64091
