Handwritten on "The Mint of the United States at San Francisco, Superintendent's Office" official letterhead. Two pages written to "My Dear Ed" from "Your Affectionate Father, Frank A. Leach," who was the superintendent of the S. F. Mint from 1897 to 1907. In 1907, Leach became Mint Director in Washington D. C. [http://www.coinlink.com/CoinGuide/us-type-coins/1907-20-high-relief-wire-rim/]. Highly readable account of what their friend's prospecting trip produced. For example, "Ferguson got back Thursday and for the past two days has been marking down his samples and making calculations. The result of which is a 'twin dome' . . . . He spent a week traversing the ground from Shillingsfords to the upper end of the Caul-Rook. The best prospect he got was from Shillingsfords showing pay of about 10 [cents] per Cubic Yard. " The last paragraph relates that Ferguson is going to leave for Forest Hill to "complete the deal for the Eureka to work through their ground." Interesting window into the world of prospecting. Excellent condition.
