A well worn Liberty Seated quarter counterstamped by Sacramento druggist J.J. Polhemus.

Sacramento was named the medical center of California during the gold rush in part due to outstanding physicians who operated above Polhemus` drug store at 7th and J Streets. He opened in 1850 but his building burned in 1852, he rebuilt and it burned again, so he spent $10,000 to build a two story fire-proof brick house. The building survived fires in 1854 and 1860. Polhemus died in 1866, and his wife continued the business until 1874. HKA#62330
