c1852-1899-Lot of 7: USPS covers from the famous gold rush town of Placerville, with 2 from the 1848 gold discovery town of Coloma. The USPS cancellation/ postmarks are a diverse 6 different types, and stamped in inks of black and green. These postmarks are listed in the "California Town Postmarks" book by J.H. Williams as follows: Placerville, ELD-2930, rarity 4 (this specific cover has the W. Tatham stamp on the reverse), ELD-2980, rarity 4, ELD-3030, rarity 2 (there are 2), The remaining cover`s postmark is not listed in the book, and indicates the date as Nov 1 1899, with "TR64" below the date, and the letters "R.P.O." below this. This an advertising cover as well, for "AW, Ingram, Batcher & Co." from Sacramento. Quite unusual. Please note the left edge has been cut off, obscuring the "AW." The remaining 2 covers are stamped from Coloma, also spelled as "Culloma" in this case, prior to November 1856. This specific cover is listed as ELD-450, rarity 5. The Coloma postmark is listed as ELD-470, rarity 3, and also a W. Tatham stamped reverse. The El Dorado area was a famous gold area in 1848 and later, sparking the gold rush, and had towns and camps like Georgetown, Shingle Springs, Fairplay, Indian Diggins, and many others. Placerville was known as "Hangtown" in the early days of the Gold Rush, for obvious reasons. Overall very good condition, some very rare. HKA#64090
