Incorporated by the Legislature of Vermont, A.D. 1849. Certificate entitles the owner to share no. 4879. Datelined Windsor, Vt., March 28th, 1850. Signed by T.E. Phelps as president and (illegible) secretary. Three vignettes: a bare chested miner resting at right, an eagle at center-top, and George Washington on the left. Although it is not clear which mine this certificate might represent, the American Mining Company owned mines all over the United States, from Virginia to California. One of their most successful mines was the San Antonia mine, which was located at New Almaden, California, the largest quicksilver mine in the U.S. This mine was located about two miles northwest of New Almaden, and may have been leased to the American Mining Company [Ref: K. Johnson, The New Almaden Quicksilver Mine, 1962].
