Records of Edward Uran, mining engineer. This is an exceptionally important archive of hundreds of mining papers (6" pile) that consists of plan views and cross sections of underground workings of hundreds of mines in the northern Mother lode region from about Auburn to Downieville, centered around Nevada-City Grass Valley. The papers include title work, assay maps, property descriptions, correspondence, printed maps, manuscript maps, company annual reports and so forth. This may be the only such archive extant, though it is clearly not complete. It offers actual and true records of the underground mining and exploration of hundreds of mines. The maps may be the only records left of the underground workings. A preliminary sort of these documents that carry these notes with regards to piece counts: Grass Valley, about 25; Nevada City, about 50 pages; Brunswick mine about 5; Washington about 10; Dutch Flat about 10; North Bloomfield about 5; Alleghany about 10; Cherokee 1 large map; French Corral map; Forest Hill about 3; Iowa Hill 1; Excelsior Ditch 1; large group of miscellaneous maps and documents, perhaps 200 pieces. The maps are by far the most remarkable portion of this archive, mostly hand drawn.
