Nevada City Mining District. 'The Nevada City district is in western Nevada County. The district covers an extensive area, from the vicinity of Indian Flat east through Nevada City, northeast to Willow Valley and southeast through Canada Hill and Banner Hill to the vicinity of the Lava Cap mine. It is both a lode- and placer-mining district and once was an important center of gold mining in California"[http://www.pioneermining.com/dist_nevada_city.htm]. Cert. #25, issued to Evert & Curtiss for 100 shares in 1853. Signed by L. P. Andrews, president pro tem, and by secretary R.B. Hoit. “California” is printed beneath masthead. Multiple vignettes: two are portraits of men—the company founders?; one at center of an Indian on horseback about to shoot a buffalo with his bow and arrow; a milkmaid at lower right holding a wooden bucket; an allegorical woman at left holding a shield with Mercury’s head on it, and a Mercury-style staff in her other hand; part of the California state shield with a seated allegorical figure holding a spear, a bear leaping alongside, and miners in the background, with “Eureka” printed above. Black border, crème paper. U/C. Printer: Danforth, Bald. & Co., N.Y. and Phila. 6 ½ x 10.” Creases, a bit of foxing along margins, and top right corner tip is missing. Some age discoloration but very fine overall considering its age. Property was originally the Sneath & Clay Mine, that in its heyday produced $180,000. R. B. Hoit may be a relative to M. F. Hoit, who ran for mayor of Nevada City in 1851.
