Minnie and Carrie Bethel, two Native American sisters who were famous Indian basket weavers in the Mono Lake Basin, befriended Briscoe and his family while they were living in Lee Vining. Carrie and Minnie brought in baskets that they were no longer using to trade Briscoe for Pendleton blankets and things they needed in their everyday lives. Among the items they traded with Broscoe over the years are these three winnowing baskets. 1) The smallest measures about 20" x 14" and has a few broken strands, but is in generally good condition. Traded between 1974-1976. 2) This winnowing basket is about 24" x 15" and is slightly charred, as a result of how pine nuts are dry roasted. The pine nuts are placed in the winnowing basket and tossed with hot coals, which sometimes char the basket in the process of drying out the pine nuts. In addition to the charring, there are also some broken rods in this basket. 3) The third basket measures 30" x 18"and also has char darkening and some minor breakage. The Bethel sisters explained that these baskets were used during their childhood and saw regular use until they were traded into Briscoe`s personal collection. These are a nice example of Mono tool making and would make a nice display.Sanderson Yosemite Collection HKA#63187
