Black print on crème paper. “State of California” is printed on bottom margin. U/C. Printer: Britton & Rey, S. F. 4" x 9.” Alfred Bell has endorsed on the reverse with this note: for value rec’d 23rd Sept. 1853 transfer the ____ to C.P. Patterson. The name "Mokelumne" was derived from Plains Miwok, and is possibly an early form of the pronunciation of the name by the Miwok, with an Anglicized spelling. The suffix "umne" means people. Most Native groups' names translate to "people" or "the people." Mokelumne Hill was first known as Big Bar in 1848 and was an important business center for the early gold miners in the southern Sierra foothill region [Ref: Holabird, Western Americana, Auction #11, Part 1, p. 14, 2001].
