Photograph measures 4” x 2.5” mounted on white matte. Medium contrast and focus is sharp. There are brown age marks that appear on the lower left and upper right sides. The sides of the matte have little expect for the lower left corner, which is slightly bent. The image depicts an older Maidu man posed for a photograph. He stands barefooted and wears a traditional headdress and 19th century coat. The photograph was taken by L.J. Stinson, located at D & 3rd Street in Marysville, California. There is also a red revenue stamp located on the back of the matte. The Maidu consist of three different groups located in Northern California. They once controlled the area east of Honey Lake in Nevada, but after the 1700s, they left, leaving the Northern Paiutes to take control of that area. The Maidu lived a hunter- gather lifestyle and were known for their excellent basket weaving. First contact with Euro Americans remained peaceful until the Gold Rush in the mid 19th Century, when many California Natives died from diseases and violence and experienced displacement from their home territory.
