The Crescent Gold and Silver Mining Co., located at Mammoth City in the Lake District of Mono County, California, was established sometime around 1873. It appears in both the State of Nevada Biennial Report of the Secretary of State and Ex Officio State Librarian 1911-1912 and the San Francisco Daily Stock Report in 1879. Miners, prospectors, and investors had high hopes for the Lake Mining District as the ore tested was of high enough grade to "prove its permanency"(The San Francisco Daily Stock Report, December 22, 1879.)The district also had great access to water power and timber which helped to keep costs down for the mining and milling companies. The Crescent Ledge, which made up the main part of the Crescent Mine, was located on the west side Mineral Hill, one of the largest mountains mined in the district. This mine was not part of the main ore body, but was rather part of a side shoot of ore. The mine is older than the Lake District which was organized by four prospectors who were searching for the Lost Cement Mine, Alpha claim, on Mineral Hill in June 1877. Very few certificates are known from the Mammoth District. Fred Holabird investigated a number of patented claims there in the late 1970s which had more real estate value than mining potential. Certificate No. 71 to John Brichett for 100 shares at $100 each, October 14, 1878. This certificate is highly decorated and is U/C, though it does not include any illustrations.
