The Jackson and Lake View Mining Company was incorporated in 1891 and had mines that were situated on the eastern slope of Mount Scowdan, at an elevation of nearly 11,000 ft. The mine is at Lundy, California, near Mono Lake. Although the exact location of Mt. Scowdan is unknown, it is known that it is in Mono County, California. The mines of this company include the May Lundy, Lakeview, and Jackson Mines. The first two were located on an easterly series of veins and the other to the west a little higher up the mountain. There were three tunnels on the May Lundy Mine; the lower being 1,150, the next 600, and the upper 160 ft. long. The ore of these mines was very rich. (Information from the Twelfth Report of the State Mineralogist, Two Years Ending September 15, 1894. Sacramento: J. Johnston, Supt. State Printing Office, 1894.) FH worked on the May Lundy circa 1979. We cleaned out the main haulage level in anticipation of possible mining. After ore reserve calculations were completed, which corresponded with a severe dip in gold/silver prices (gold dropped precipitously), we didn’t think we could operate at a profit. It would be an excellent exploration target today.

This is an extremely rare stock certificate from the Jackson and Lake View Mining Company. The paper of the certificate has oxidized and has been repaired. It was issued to Stephen C. Perry, Trustee and Treasurer of the company for 3200 shares, fifth day of January, 1893. The signature of the President is illegible. Also included is a company seal with the date of incorporation. There are no vignettes on the certificate, but the name of the company is highly decorated and there is a decorative border.
