Incorporated in 1874. Cert. #1 issued to D.P. Gordon for 500 shares. Signed by Michael Hawkins, president, and I.E. Delaware, secretary. Small vignette at bottom of a dog guarding a safe. Black border on crème paper. U/C. Printer: LeCount Bros. & Mansur, S.F. Datelined San Francisco. 4 x 9.” It is interesting to note that Klamath Co., California only existed between 1851 and 1874. On May 28 of that year the state dissolved the county. Part of the county had already been given over to Del Norte County when it was formed in 1857, and the remaining part of Klamath was divided up between Humboldt and Siskiyou counties in 1874. Thus, when this certificate was printed, Klamath County no longer existed. There is some possibility this was a placer mining operation, given the information quoted below from William B. Clark’s article in the California Division of Mines and Geology Bulletin 193: "The Klamath Mountains region in northwestern California is the second-most gold-productive province in California. The principal gold districts are in Shasta, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties. Although there are several important lode-gold districts, the placer deposits have been the largest sources of gold” [Ref: goldmaps.com/calif/california_gold_mines_6.htm].
