Inyo Mining district. Incorporated in 1863. Cert. #60, issued to Benjamin Dore for 25 shares. Signed by Benj. Dore, president, and by W.H. Daris, secretary. Vignette at center of George Washington portrait with an eagle on top, flanked by 2 allegorical women. An elaborate design at left end column showing a woman’s portrait in the center. She is wearing a large feather in her hat. Within that left column is printed: “Lodes. Orient, Eleanor, Montgomery.” A very small vignette at bottom of a woman holding a balance scale. There are two federal revenue stamps at lower left for 5cts and 20cts. Black border on crème paper. U/C. Printer: name obscured by revenue stamps. Datelined San Francisco. 5 ½ x 10.” In April 1860 Col. H.P. Russ and Dr. S.G. George, along with about 20 followers, organized the Russ mining district in the Inyo Range to the east of Owens Lake. Mining began about a year later. Although production data is not complete, there were several gold producing mines in the district. Inyo County was not organized until March 1866, well after the issue date of this stock [Ref: California Place Names, Erwin G.
