Hornitos was founded in the mid 1800's when Mexican miners moved there from Quartzburg. It was a very small town with a population of less than 7,000 people. Hornitos became a prosperous town, as gold nuggets were found in streams nearby, and quartz gold lay beneath the town's rocky surfaces. The town began to die down as the gold ran out. Various building and ruins still remain today such as, the Ghirardelli store before he moved to San Francisco to build his well-known chocolate company of today.
