Lot of 3: North Star Mine Blueprint and Drift Mining Car Blueprint: 1)Architectural drawing for “Skip for skinning Vertical Shaft, North Star Mine” The North Star Mine Powerhouse is located in Grass Valley California, and developed the largest tangential water wheel in the world. North Star is located a mile from the famous Empire Mine. Competition in Grass Valley was fierce due to the number of mining operations and lack of power supply. Most mines operated with wood-fired engines, requiring loads of timber. Many mines had to close and re-open due to power constraints. The North Star mine converted to hydraulic power after seeing Lawrence Pelton’s “Pelton Wheel”. Shortly thereafter, Arthur De Wint Foote designed a 30-foot wheel to drive new compressors which were capable of delivering 90lbs of air pressure into the North Star’s 2,000 foot deep central mine shaft. 2) Advertisement for the Greene type C Mine Car, and 3) Blueprints from the Telegram Drift Mining Company for a “Self Dumping Skip for Incline/ 15 Cubic Foot Capacity” Mining Car. Blue prints include five detailed drawing providing specifications and dimensions. This car was to be used in drift mines, which used a horizontal mining approach to follow a bed of vein or ore. This type of mining is done only when the rock or mineral is located on a hillside. Picture Frame crack.
