Four vignettes: center shows a side-wheeler, steam and sailing vessel at sea; at left is an allegorical Lady Liberty holding an American flag; to eh right is a sheaf of wheat; and at bottom a small vignette of a dog guarding a safe. Black border and print with mauve-colored underprint (“Capital Stock $400,000”). U/C. No printer noted. Datelined Carson City, N.T. 5 ½ x 10 ½.” XF condition. Today the Great Mogul Mining District is located in Alpine County, CA, which was organized in 1864 (a year after this certificate was issued) out of parts of Amador, El Dorado, Calaveras, Tuolumne and Mono counties. Historically, the county’s mining activity stemmed directly from the Big Bonanza of the Comstock, as hopeful prospectors fanned out in every direction hoping for another huge strike. By 1863 there were at least five mining districts established in what is now Alpine County. They were the Mogul, Monitor, Silver Mountain, Raymond and Alpine. Within 3 years another four had been added—the Excelsior, Faith, Red Mountain/Hope Valley, and Silver Valley. The Monitor was probably the most important district of those mentioned [Ref: www.scenic4.org/history.html].
