July 20, 1848-Lot of two professionally framed maps by Col. Richard B. Mason, titled Map of the Upper and Lower Mines on the South Fork of the American River. The larger of the two maps measures 10 x 18” and is double matted and framed with a .5” gilt liner in a 3” wooden frame for an overall measurement of 17” x 26.” The smaller piece features the Upper Mines and the Lower Mines--or Mormon Diggings and shows their placements in relation to the river. This map measures 6 x 9” and is also double matted, with gilt liner and 2” wooden frame, matching the first. Its overall measurement is 13 x 15.” The American River is divided into the north, middle and south forks. The South Fork is 87 miles in length, originating near Echo Lake at Lake Tahoe’s south shore before joining with the north and middle forks near Sacramento. California’s original gold discovery site of Coloma is situated along its shore. Col. Mason’s map and his report of his tour to the gold fields were included with President Polk’s annual message to Congress in December 1848. The President used Mason’s claims about the abundance of gold in California to justify the U.S. acquisition of property from Mexico at the conclusion of the Mexican-American War. HKA#64654
